Hot Air: Words, Good & Bad

That Guy

I can’t even get mad at him for this:

That’s who he is. He can no more convey heartfelt emotion for other human beings than a turtle can leap six feet in the air.

Everybody who paid even the slightest bit of attention knew this about the man. Yet some 63 million Americans voted for him for president

I’m mad at them.

Nineteenth of September

Author George Saunders will speak here in Bloomington, Tuesday, September 19th, at the Buskirk-Chumley Theater.

Saunders is a big deal in the literary world, having won a handful of National Magazine Awards through the years and a second-place O. Henry Award in 1997. He was a finalist for the PEN/Hemingway Award the year before that. More recently, he copped both a MacArthur Fellowship and a Guggenheim Fellowship in 2006 (the artists’ equivalent of winning Powerball twice in the same year) and in 2013 won a PEN/Malamud Award and was a finalist for the National Book Award.

He’ll be this year’s Susan G. Gubar Annual Lecture guy and an IU College of Arts & Humanities Institute’s Distinguished Visitor.
