Hot Air: Rights And Wrongs

I hate to say I agree with President Gag, but I do in this instance.

Well, let’s say I agree with his stance 60 percent of the way.

Last night a gang of righteous roman candle throwers and fire-starters raised such a ruckus on the University of California-Berkeley campus that the scheduled speech by professional prick Milo Yiannopoulos had to be cancelled. It’s the second time in three weeks that a Yiannopoulos appearance at a U. Cal-system campus has been short-circuited by student protest.

And I use the term “student” generously. My guess is most of the hell-raisers were pro anarchists.

President Gag took to Twitter to say:

If U.C. Berkeley does not allow free speech and practices violence on innocent people with a different point of view – NO FEDERAL FUNDS?

First off, Jesus H. Christ, we have a goddamned president who uses ALL CAPS promiscuously. Heaven help us all.

More importantly, though, he’s right to be offended by protesters’ efforts to silence anybody, no matter how disgustingly hateful and shit-splattered their rhetoric is. And, believe me, Yiannopoulos’s speech is more rotten than a raw egg dropped on a spit-mottled sidewalk on a hot August afternoon.

Nevertheless, as a 1st Amendments absolutist, I have to stand behind the odious little pimp and defend his right to verbally spew.

I won’t even bother to call on L’il Duce to extend the same defense he afforded Yiannopoulos to ranters and ravers on the opposite side of the fence because I know he won’t. The only reason President Gag is leaping to Y’s defense is that Y speaks the language of hatred that helped propel the commander-in-chief to his technical victory.

Still, as long as the president is defending a single person’s right to speak, I’ll agree with him.

Now, where do I diverge from a man whom I normally disagree with re: which direction the sun will rise in the AM  tomorrow? The Leader of the Free World is threatening the entire U. financially for the actions of a gang of hoods. But let’s ignore the fact that the mini-rioters were prob. “outsiders.” Let’s pretend they were all enrolled, serious students. Even in that case, the President of the United States has zero business extorting a major university.

But see, that’s the man we elected, for chrissakes. He’s a bully even when he’s on the side of the angels — a position he finds himself on with the frequency of the appearance of Halley’s Comet.

To be sure, I find the fact that I’m agreeing with President Gag on something — anything — makes me profoundly itchy.
